Start with location when separating Black-capped and Carolina Chickadees. Away from their contact zone, range is often the strongest clue. Where they meet, compare wing edging, the nape and voice together, and accept that some birds cannot be identified confidently from a photograph.

A Cooper’s Hawk usually looks larger-headed and broader-shouldered than a Sharp-shinned Hawk. In adults, its dark cap contrasts with a paler nape. Check those features together with the tail and posture; size or a single tail shape can mislead.

Male House Finches usually have brown-streaked sides with red concentrated around the face and upper breast. Male Purple Finches have a more extensive rosy wash. For female-plumaged birds, look for the Purple Finch’s strong pale eyebrow and contrasting face; House Finches have a plainer face.

A Downy Woodpecker has a short bill that looks small against its head; a Hairy Woodpecker has a longer bill approaching head length. Start with a clear side view of the bill, then check the outer tail feathers. Overall size helps most when there is something nearby for comparison.
