Nature Sound Log

← All field tools

Keep a timed listening log of sounds, habitats and identification confidence.

Describe the sounds you hear, when and where you hear them, and how confident you are about the source. This is a manual listening notebook.

Off by default. Enable to load or save this tool’s data. Other people using the browser may see it; export a backup. Disabling removes the saved copy but keeps this page’s entries.
Add a record

Use rhythm, pitch, repetition and background sounds in your notes. The log does not record audio, request microphone access or identify a sound. Confidence reflects your assessment. Listening durations can overlap, so their sum is labelled entry-minutes rather than total survey effort.

Entered observation and deployment dates support 1900–2100. These tools use the local dates you enter; they do not infer time zones or submit records to a monitoring programme.

Instructions

  1. Enter Observation date, Local time, Site / general location and Habitat.
  2. Write Sound description using rhythm, pitch and repetition.
  3. Enter Possible source / species, Attribution confidence and Listening duration (minutes), then select Add record.
  4. Use Export CSV, Download text or Print results to keep your listening notes.

Understanding your results

A description such as three short whistles repeated every few seconds remains useful even when the source is unknown. Confidence records your judgement. The total is entry-minutes; overlapping listening entries can describe the same period more than once.

What to do if you expected a recording or automatic identification

This is a manual notebook and has no microphone recording feature. Write down the sound as you hear it and leave the source unknown when unsure. You can revise the entry later if you find stronger identification evidence.

Using this tool in your browser

These entries are handled in your browser. Saving is off by default; enable the storage checkbox to retain this tool’s records on this device. Other people using the same browser may see them. Clearing site data removes the saved copy. Export a separate backup before changing devices or resetting entries.

Summary

Separate the sound you heard from your guess about what made it.
