Bird Count Tally

← All field tools

Count species quickly and export a timestamped observation session.

Create a species list for one outing, then use the +1 and −1 buttons while you watch. Save a new species with an initial count of zero if you want to prepare a checklist.

Off by default. Enable to load or save this tool’s data. Other people using the browser may see it; export a backup. Disabling removes the saved copy but keeps this page’s entries.
Count session
Add a record

The tally records the latest change time, not each sighting. Count individuals only once when you can recognise a returning bird. Session rate = count ÷ minutes × 60; it uses elapsed minutes, not observer-hours. Duration, number of observers and distance help describe effort. A zero here means a prepared or corrected row, not evidence that a species was absent. See eBird’s counting guidance. This is a personal tally, not an eBird submission format.

Entered observation and deployment dates support 1900–2100. These tools use the local dates you enter; they do not infer time zones or submit records to a monitoring programme.

Instructions

  1. Fill Count session, including Observation effort (minutes), Observers and Distance covered (km), then select Apply session.
  2. Enter Species or description, Count and optional Notes, then select Add record.
  3. Use each row’s +1 and −1 buttons while watching. Keep returning birds from being counted twice where possible.
  4. Select Export CSV, Download text or Print results to retain the session.

Understanding your results

The hourly rate scales your count by elapsed observation minutes. Six observations in 30 minutes becomes 12 per hour. It describes this session, not the number of birds living at the site. A prepared row with zero count is not proof of absence.

What to do if you cannot add the same species again

The tally uses one row per species. Adjust that existing row instead. Check the applied session effort if rates seem wrong, and record observer numbers separately; the rate does not divide by observer-hours.

Using this tool in your browser

These entries are handled in your browser. Saving is off by default; enable the storage checkbox to retain this tool’s records on this device. Other people using the same browser may see them. Clearing site data removes the saved copy. Export a separate backup before changing devices or resetting entries.

Summary

A clear session description makes your tally easier to interpret later.
