Wildlife Observation Journal

Record sightings, keep notes and export your field observations.

Keep a small field notebook of sightings and identification confidence. Notes start in this page's memory. Turn on browser storage only if you want this journal retained on this device.

Storage is not an account or backup. Other people using this browser may see your entries. Clearing browser data removes them. Existing saved entries load only after you enable this option.

Keep sensitive nesting sites and rare-species locations general. Confidence records your assessment; this tool does not identify species. Export a CSV backup before changing devices. Disabling storage removes this tool's saved copy while keeping the current page's entries until you leave.

Instructions

  1. Enter Observation date, Species or description and General location. An uncertain description is useful too.
  2. Add Number seen, Identification confidence and Behaviour and field marks, then select Add observation.
  3. Review your entries and use Export CSV or Print journal to keep a copy.

Understanding your results

Write what you actually observed before deciding on an identification. For example, a small brown bird with a pale eyebrow is a useful record even when you do not know its name. Number seen describes your observation, not a population estimate.

What to do if your earlier journal entries are missing

Use the same browser and device and enable Save my journal in this browser on this device to load its saved copy. Browser data may have been cleared. Keep a separate CSV backup; storage is optional and cannot recover deleted entries.

Using this tool in your browser

These entries are handled in your browser. Saving is off by default; enable the storage checkbox to retain this tool’s records on this device. Other people using the same browser may see them. Clearing site data removes the saved copy. Export a separate backup before changing devices or resetting entries.

Summary

Your journal is most useful when dates, locations and uncertainty are recorded consistently.
