Hearts of snakes are located between 15% and 25% of their body length from their head. Different snakes have different positions of their hearts; some have them further or closer to their heads. Snakes’ hearts also don’t stay in one place, and they shift as the snake moves.
A snake’s heart position varies due to habitat and size. Arboreal snakes usually have hearts positioned closer, while terrestrial snakes have them further away. Though observed, there’s no accurate scientific explanation for this phenomenon.
In larger snakes, the heart sits further back from the head so blood can be pushed across a longer body. The heart itself isn’t anchored in one spot either; it slides a little as the snake slithers, which helps keep blood moving rather than pooling.

A snake’s heart has three chambers: two atria and one ventricle. The atria receive blood from the lungs and body. The ventricle pumps blood into the arteries.

What Is the Renal Portal System?
The Renal Portal System, found in reptiles, keeps a steady supply of blood flowing to the kidneys and the organs around them. A vein branches off from the tail and feeds into the kidney, passes through lymph nodes, then joins another vein that runs back up to the heart. It’s one of the quiet reasons snakes hold up so well in tough conditions.
