Because lizards are such small creatures, they’re often hunted by other animals for food. Hawks, snakes, and dogs are some of their common predators. Thousands of lizard species exist in various parts of the world, but they all share this trait: they sit low on the food chain.
Lizards escape predators through speed and camouflage. Some move so fast they seem to run on water. They can change their skin color to blend into their surroundings, making it difficult for predators to spot them. Some lizards also have the unusual ability to shoot blood from their eyes to scare off predators.

Lizard Predators
1. Birds
Many birds, like road runners, raptors, owls, hawks, and crows, are known to eat lizards. Some swoop down to snatch them off the ground, while others eat them whole. For certain bird species, lizards are a staple diet, while others eat them opportunistically.
2. Snakes
Lizards face greater risk as snakes hunt on land and in trees. Snakes can swallow prey larger than themselves, even whole lizards. Lizards with tougher skin, like the Thorny Dragon, are less likely to be preyed upon due to their sharp scales.
3. Dogs
Many people assume lizards are toxic to dogs, yet dogs will still grab one given the chance. A natural prey drive pushes them to chase and snap up small animals, and some breeds show this behaviour more strongly than others. Any dog might bite at a passing frog or lizard, but eating reptiles can carry real risk because a few lizard species are mildly toxic to pets.
4. Other Lizards
Some larger lizards are predators. Certain species, like collared lizards and geckos, hunt and eat smaller lizards.
5. Humans
Lastly, humans also eat lizards. In various cultures, they’re consumed as a delicacy or medicine. In parts of Africa and Asia, people commonly eat lizard meat, believing it has healing properties.
Lizards have several predators to watch out for. Their speed, camouflage, and ability to shoot blood from their eyes help them escape many attacks. Still, they remain vulnerable to higher food chain animals.
Where Do Predators Find Lizards?
Lizards live across forests, deserts, grasslands, trees, near water, and sometimes inside houses. Snakes and other predators track them down in those same spots, the same way they hunt small mammals or rodents.
Birds of prey, like hawks and owls, hunt lizards in open spaces where they’re easier to spot. Dogs might catch them during a walk in the park or even in your backyard.
