Pace Count Distance Calculator

Calibrate your own steps and estimate distance in the field.

Calibrate distance from your own steps. Your results can be printed or downloaded for field use.

Enter your measurements, then calculate.

Method and assumptions

Step length = measured calibration distance ÷ calibration steps. Walk distance = observed steps × step length; target steps = target distance ÷ step length, rounded up. Count every footfall, not just one foot. Repeat calibration on similar terrain, footwear and load; an average from several measured courses is more useful than a generic stride length.

Instructions

  1. Walk a measured course and enter Measured calibration distance with Distance unit.
  2. Enter Single steps on calibration course, counting every footfall.
  3. Add Single steps on this walk and, if useful, a Target distance (same unit).
  4. Select Calculate, then Print result or Download CSV.

Understanding your results

A 100 m course covered in 140 single steps gives an average step length of about 0.714 m. At that length, 700 steps represents 500 m. Target steps are rounded up. This assumes your later steps resemble your calibration walk.

What to do if the estimated distance is roughly twice or half what you expected

Check whether you counted every step or only one foot. The tool uses single steps throughout. Recalibrate with the footwear, load and terrain you plan to use; steep ground changes stride length.

Summary

Your own repeated calibration is a more useful starting point than a generic step length.
