How Many Squirrels Are In The World?

It is practically impossible to determine the exact number of squirrels in the world, as they are found in a wide range of habitats and are difficult to count. However, it is known that there are more than 200 species of squirrels found throughout the world.

Challenges in Counting

With squirrels spread across various habitats like forests, deserts, grasslands, and cities, counting their global population is tough.

The elusive nature of many squirrel species and their ability to blend in make counting them challenging. Fluctuations in food and predation also impact squirrel populations, complicating consistent estimates.

Problems Caused by Squirrel Populations in Parks and Gardens

Squirrels can damage gardens by eating sweet corn, tomatoes, flowers, and newly planted seeds. They also become a nuisance at bird feeders, scaring birds and scattering seeds.

This problem often occurs in cities where squirrels easily find food. Homeowners can prevent this by using squirrel-proof bird feeders, fencing, repellents, or trapping and relocating squirrels.
